The largest air separation unit (ASU) operated by an industrial gases company in Turkey has officially opened. The Isdemir Linde Gaz Ortaklığı A.Ş. plant – ILGaz for short – is a joint venture between Turkish steel producer OYAK Mining Metallurgy Group (OYAK MMG), and leading global gases and engineering company The Linde Group.
The partnership, established in November 2016, demonstrates OYAK MMG’s pioneering approach to steel production and utilises the benefits of Linde’s broad international experience and strong track-record in developing joint ventures with customers.
The new plant at OYAK MMG’s Iskenderun site (Isdemir), which started operation in January 2018, is the largest air separation unit operated by an industrial gas company in Turkey. It will supply up to 1,700 tonnes of oxygen and nitrogen per day through a Build, Own, Operate (BOO) business model. These gases are essential for productivity, quality, safety and sustainability in steel production.
OYAK Group Manager Director, Süleyman Savaş Erdem said: “As OYAK Mining Metallurgy Group, we are carrying out our work in a planned way with our 'productivity increase' which is one of our priority targets. In this context, the industrial gas production plant that we have established jointly with The Linde Group will carry the sustainable productivity of our company to a further level and make a significant contribution to our group financially. I believe this investment, which I see as a valuable symbol of our vision of 'maximum efficiency through technological transformation', will provide a significant added value to both OYAK and our country's economy”.
Recognising the importance of the newly launched plant and reinforcing Linde’s commitment to the dynamic Turkish market, Bernd Eulitz, Member of the Executive Board of Linde AG said “Technology, innovation and a solution-oriented spirit have been at the heart of The Linde Group for almost 140 years. We are pleased to bring our global expertise and experience to support the production processes of our partner, OYAK Mining Metallurgy Group. The new air separation unit and BOO serve as industrial gases supply solutions for the steel plant, with compelling cost competitive, efficient, reliable, world-class technologies, industry-leading safety features and environment-friendly best practices.”
